Turn Your Thermostat Down It may sound too simple but according to a previous study, 2.7
million households are turning their thermostats all the way to 25 °C.
If everyone in the UK lowered their thermostats it could add up to a combined
saving of up to £1.4 Billon on heating bills. It would also save a huge amount
of carbon.
We advise that the ideal temperature is somewhere between 18 °C
and 21 °C. The general rule is that for every degree you turn your heating down,
you could save around £80 a year.
Only Use the Heating When It’s Needed You may have been told it’s cheaper to leave your heating on
all day at a low temperature. But let us reassure you that is certainly not
true. The truth is that having the heating on only when you need it is the best
way to save money. Ultimately why would you heat an empty house?
Generally, most thermostats will house a timer or programme
function. This will enable you to turn your heating on and off with a schedule
that works for you and doesn’t require you to physically turn it on.
Keep The Heat In A good approach to keep heat staying in your house is by
draught proofing any gaps within your property. This helps regulate warm and
cold air coming in and out. A gap many have is under their front door. A
rolled-up towel or blanket should help keep the cold outside.
If you want to do more. You could fit a brush or hinged flap
draught excluder. Even something small like a keyhole cover would help keep the
heat inside rather than out.
Get A Smart Meter Smart metres are a fantastic way to cut costs. They show you
your energy use in near-real time displayed in pounds and pence. Evidence shows
that most people use them to manage their energy use, save money and reduce any
emissions that lead to climate change.
